Many of you might have guppies and mollies in your aquarium. You even might have wondered if you can cross-breed guppies and mollies. How special the fish would look if they are a hybrid between a guppy and a molly?

These two fish species are beautiful fish and if they can hybrid, it might result in the most beautiful fish in your aquarium.

But, first, you need to make sure that you can actually breed guppies and mollies. And, you need to make sure that you are doing it safely.

This is why this guide is important when you are considering guppy and molly hybrid. Here is everything you need to know.

Is it possible – guppy molly hybrid?

Is guppy and molly hybrid possible?

Yes, it is possible under certain circumstances. If you have male and female guppies in the tank, and male and female mollies, it will be hard to cross-breed. However, if you have just one male guppy and two or three female mollies, this will be possible to cross-breed.

There are actually two different names for guppy and molly hybrids. They are called Muppy or Golly. If the male is the Guppy and the female the Molly, the fish will be called the Golly. If the male is the Molly and the female is the guppy, the fish will be called Muppy.

There is an easy explanation of why guppies and mollies can breed with each other.  This is because they come from the same genus, called Poecilia. This is making it possible for them to breed with each other.

However, you need to make sure that you know all the benefits and problems that you can get with guppy molly hybrids. Just because it is possible, it doesn’t mean that you will not have problems with the breeding between these two fish.

One thing that many aquarium owners have reported is that the fry between a guppy and molly isn’t as strong as with purebred fry. They die easier and you need to take special care of them. Even if you have them in a separate breeding tank, you will have less fries growing up than with purebred fries.

How to hybridize guppy and molly?

There isn’t anything difficult about hybridizing guppies and mollies. However, in order for you to be successful, you need to remember a couple of things.

1 – The size of your tank. To be able to breed successfully, you need to consider the size of your tank. The bigger the tank, the more successful you might be. This is especially important when it comes to cross-breeding.

2 – The ratio between the mollies and guppies needs to be considered. Just like when you are breeding just with mollies or just with guppies, the ratio between males and females should be correct. Meaning 1 male with 4 females. In this case, it should be 1 guppy male with 4 female mollies. The moment that you have male and female of the same species, you will not be able to create hybrids.

3 – Just like with normal breeding, you should take special care of the pregnant females, and separate them just before giving birth.

4 – It is important to remember not to place male mollies with guppy females. Even if they will still breed together, you will have some serious problems with the female not able to give birth to larger fries.

What should you avoid when hybridizing guppy and molly?

Even if it is easy to hybridizing guppy and molly fish, there are a couple of things that you seriously should avoid. Not only to be successful with cross-breeding between the two species but also to avoid death.

You should make sure that you are only breeding male guppies to female mollies. Remember that mollies are larger than guppies. So, the fries of mollies will be large. Too large for a female guppy. If you have a male molly with female guppies, there will be a high risk that the fries will kill her, when she is giving birth.

Something else to consider is that muppies are interesting and colorful. Many things that they are cute. Cross-breeding isn’t wrong, but you need to be honest about the fact that they are hybrids. You should never try selling them as purebred, or give it away and saying that these fish is purebred. This is dishonest. You always need to be honest and say that they are guppy and molly hybrids. The problem starts when genetic manipulations get involved. Nature purposely limits itself and it becomes scary what can of worms, scientists are opening.

The two things to avoid that you should not forget about.

  1. Only breed male guppies to female mollies. The size of the fry will kill the female when she is giving birth, if the female is the guppy. Also, make sure that you have 1 male guppy to 4 female mollies ratio in your tank.
  2. And do not try to sell or give them away as a pure breed. This is dishonest, and cause problems when the person is breeding with the fish.

Conclusion

Is guppy and molly hybrid possible? And if this is possible, how will you be able to get this cross-breed done successfully? This is a question that you might be wondering about. Yes, a guppy and molly hybrid is possible. But you need to remember that it should be a guppy male with a molly female. And, that you should not have male and female mollies or guppies in the tank. Otherwise, they will not cross-breed with each other. With this guide, you will now know everything there is to know about guppy molly hybrids. You can even try creating your own hybrid, using guppy males and molly females.
